Filters for a 300 gallon tank

I may have found an answer to my concerns for the sand/gravel filter. Here is a thread where a person did an experiment with gravity feeding one. There results look promising.

Filters for a 300 gallon tank

Hi all, I will be moving my 300 gallon tank soon and want to redo my filtration. Currently it is in my bedroom on a stand that doubles as a dresser so there was not much room for filtration so I use a 55 gallon tank as a sump. I have a mag 18 as a return pump. I am using a "bean animal" style...

Dissecting a 6 year old plywood tank (why it failed)

On the next tank I plan on building the entire overflow out of chopped fiberglass. This way I can attach it to the tank and fiberglass it in. This will allow a complete waterproof joint with no screws. On another note, I discovered that the rubber sealing washers for my bulkhead fittings were...

Dissecting a 6 year old plywood tank (why it failed)

Hello all 6 years ago I designed and built a 130 gallon plywood tank with three windows. If you want to see the build it can be found here. The tank measured roughly 24x48x24 and I used fiberglass and epoxy to seal it. The tank was designed with a 3-pipe overflow system with an internal...

    36" Wide Tanks--30" Doors

a way around having a shorter stand is to build the stand it two parts. my current 300 sits on a 36" tall by 36" wide stand and my door was only 30 inches as well but i built a 2x6 pedistall for the stand to sit on. dress it up with some wide molding and nobody is the wiser

    Plywood Aquarium questions.

for a tank that long and tall i would defiantly go with a 2x4 frame with 3/4 inch plywood this would give you the required strength for a tank that tall. if you go this route you can butt joint two pieces of ply on the stud to get your 10 feet. have you looked into the price of glass or acrylic...

How thick should my plywood be?

i have contradict you "mymonsterfish" glass thickness is determined by the height of the tank not how many gallons the tank will hold. from a little bit of research i have found that a 75 gallon tank will have ruffly 3/8 inch glass. this is plenty for a tank that is up to 24 inches tall. the...

    New to DIY Tanks

i have used "max acr" epoxy and also "uscomposits" epoxy resins for my tanks. i also use at least one layer of 6 ounce fiberglass cloth to cover the major surfaces of the tank and an extra layer in the seams. then i add another 2 to 3 coats of resin to ensure a water tight seal. as for the...

    New to DIY Tanks

i have built several tanks with side glass along with the front glass. the biggest reason i have found is that people don't want to have the expense of adding the required glass or acrylic to add the extra windows. i looked at it as adding extra front windows to the sides. my first tank a 120, 4...

hi guys, well i installed the new pump and i have good news. i do not need the extra water capacity after all. at first it did raise the water level in the tank about an inch but after fiddling with my drain i was able to drop it back down to a good level.

    extra water capacity for sump

Yea that was an idea I had. Even if the siphon failed it would not cause problems. I do have a cover on the tank but not the sump. I'm not going to do anything till I get the new pump running
