    My move to the Philippines

Accusing someone of using or selling drugs is just the premise for killing or intimidating the political opposition, journalists, people who refuse to pay bribes, whistleblowers or people who the police or those allied with the administration don't like...

    My move to the Philippines

"Since taking office on June 30, 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has carried out a “war on drugs” that has led to the deaths of over 12,000 Filipinos to date, mostly urban poor. At least 2,555 of the killings have been attributed to the Philippine National Police." "Marcos has not...

    My move to the Philippines

I have a friend who retired to Colombia (Medellin) and after a couple of years moved to Uruguay about a year and a half ago. He really likes both but found the tax and healthcare situation in Uruguay better...although Uruguay is significantly more expensive. The key is living pretty simply: no...

    Dumb question about sumps...

I use "dump" (overhead) filters on many of my large tanks. They're far superior to sumps in many ways: less head loss, no fiddling with overflows, basically unlimited capacity, easy to clean, you can grow plants in them, etc. Buy a sump and modify it, if you want, but most of mine are simple...

what are your methods quarantine when purchasing a fish from a local store?

I always, always, always quarantine. Just put the new fish in a separate, comfortable tank and observe. As others have noted, not quarantining is a roll of the dice. Both for the existing fish and the new fish. I just returned from South America with a bunch of new fish that I caught. All...

    Backyard earthworms

You don't need to do anything to feed the worms to your fish than to drop them in or break them up to make them smaller, depending on the fish that is going to eat them. I culture red wiggler worms (AKA composting worms) and also collect worms from my driveway when it rains. Earthworms are...

    Pond Filter for Aquarium

Do you have space above the tank? I'm a huge fan of overhead or dump filters because you can accomplish a lot of filtration with very little head loss.

    Sticker Shock!!!

Post-COVID inflation is a world-wide problem, although inflation and the consumer prices have greatly subsided in many places, including the US. Here's a tracker for country by country inflation, price indices and other financial metrics from the Financial Times for those interested...

    Sticker Shock!!!

Another reason to get involved in fish clubs is that people are always selling / trading stuff, usually quite inexpensively. Way better than the randomness of social media, Craigslist, etc. I've got a couple of used 55s that I was given sitting in my yard as we speak. Free for the pick-up in...

PVC tubes under gravel to remove debris

UGFs - forward or reverse - rely on having a uniform substrate to operate well. Cichlids, cats and other fish that dig really challenge this. They also require regular, really thorough gravel vacuuming. One of many reasons I'm not a fan.

PVC tubes under gravel to remove debris

You could do similar by using a thin layer of substrate (like coarse sand) and placing a circulation pump or power head in a way that blows detritus into the water column to be sucked up by a filter.

Trying to breed Red Tiger Severums

When you see a pair forming, I'd keep them in the 125g and remove all but 1 other fish. I sometimes keep the other fish behind a divider so it doesn't get beat up and can't bother the pair. I'd add live worms (I culture red wigglers) to the diet. Feed heavily in the run up to a big water...

    Compartment filters?

The simplest internal filter is a side wall of Poret. I use jet lifters and also place a box filter or two behind the Poret wall to keep things clean. Also a big fan of overhead filters. If you use under-the-bed rubbermaid bins, you can have as little as 7" or so. I try to place the pump for...

    High Nitrate

Duane lived in the tropical paradise of Milwaukee prior to Panama ;) Pothos don't need a ton of light - natural or man made - and do a great job. Same with peace lilies, monstera and a lot of others.

    High Nitrate

The more water changes the better. I'd add a drip system/drain, if practical. You can ad dechlor and a hose (in addition to drip) in place of doing actual water changes, if you have a drain. Also, Pothos and other fast growing plants can be sponges.
