What are your overrated foods for fish?

Yeah, if I'm cutting a cuke anyway I might cut a couple slices for the goldfish and pleco, they do seem to like them, but yeah I'll be cleaning out more than the leftovers in the morning so I don't. Lettuce can go straight to hell. I think wild food is underrated. Starting a culture from wild...

    Do fish feel pain?

Lack of practical choice is important I think. If a fish eats with an old hook in its mouth, is it objectively not in pain? I had a bunch of teeth pulled a couple weeks ago, I figured I just wouldn't eat for a couple days because eating hurt, and getting food back outta the holes was gross, and...

    Do fish feel pain?

My guess is all living things feel similar things, the diversity is in how they react and deal. I'd be pretty hard to study myself, I stub my toe and it is obvious I feel pain to any observer, I bent a motorcycle between my legs hard enough to break my pelvis in a couple places - and I was...

Trading in fish for cash or store credit.

Suppose it depends on scale. At most I ever have is a single spawn to move on, so might take care of half the garbage bill every few months, or a couple cans of food and a pack of frozen bloodworms is just as good to me. This is provided the local doesn't already have what I have. Right now I...

    Storage Container Condo

If you can afford enough heating and AC anything is possible. Anyone here load trucks for a living? New coffee shop in town made out of those things, looks neat, people seem alright, betting it does not last too long.

    Everglades Pygmy Sunfish and Co.

Aww, that sucks. Have not had any experience with pygmies, but my orange spot and long ears didn't eat for a week after collecting, stayed stacked and hid mostly for another while only eating mosquito fish fry, another couple weeks and they are all about frozen blood worms, but the orange spots...

    Most difficult fish to keep?

Yeah, but still, some fish add a bit more than just unforgiving of water quality/amount. I kinda want a pipe fish set up, but I know I'll need to culture specific live food, they'll need to be mail-ordered and don't ship well, need lots of filtration - and very little water movement. . .

Brackish tank with Kribensis and Orange Chromides???

Quick side question Duanes, Mangroves are perennial right? I use local reeds, and they've been doing the job, but die after flowering, and everything is flowering now.

Brackish tank with Kribensis and Orange Chromides???

Got kribs in my 75 too, Krib took out a convict, 4 rams, bunch of danios, couple swordtails, momma, and kept everyone else in the corner for a few weeks there. . .but great dad other than the upcoming incest after killing the mama. . . smooth easy sailing otherwise. Also never heard of keeping...

Best options for dwarf cichlid hybrids

When I was setting up my 75 for dwarfs, due to budget/shipping/history I decided to only get what I could source within an hours drive. I was keeping an eye out for keyholes, apistos, checkerboard, small growing geos....and ended up going for rams and kribs. Kribs killed the rams once they...

Best options for dwarf cichlid hybrids

I'd think apistos would likely work, and deeply concern most of the folks into apistos. Not a hybrid, but everyone loves ram color morphs and if you have success - those midnight rams are spendy and don't breed so true.

What filter brand do you use?

Lame, I guess that's the gamble, mine actually came with a generous amount of standard air-line tubing which worked fine. Most of the writing on the box is Chinese but mine say Super Biochemical Sponge Filter xy 280.

DIY 3d rock with actual rock

Shale from the railroad tracks, I'd soak the rocks in a bucket for a day to see if any oily weirdness seeps out. Likely wont, and then get to crafting. :) Most of my rocks are from a ditch next to a cow pasture.

What filter brand do you use?

Got a two for one I need to find again. 2 for 6$ and they are sturdier and better behaved than the ones I was paying 15$ a piece local. Last two small tanks I got my first tetra internal filters from Wal-Mart, and other than the suction cups (use the wire thing) I like 'em, might not last long...

    Want to Buy Warmouth sunfish

Dunno, but it seems like warmouths live in NJ. Bait shops and fish trucks (which normally stop at farmer's co-ops and feed stores once or twice a season) sometimes have sunfish - normally just green around here in AR. Not sure about NJ fishing regulations, but I just collected my orange spot...

My 4ft tank water colour changed

The fast breathing isn't good, waiting for your water test numbers, but otherwise it sounds like the algae issues with my goldfish tank. Bigger poopier fish, less plants, much limited clean-up crew, so it needs and gets twice the water changes of my other tanks, and I run the lights less. Last...

    Such a rewarding hobby.

Oh it's great, I had a pair of small geophagus years ago, I remember coming home and my wife telling me the eggs were gone, thinks the mom ate them, we go to the tank and mom burps out dozens of the little bastards. . .I should get mouth brooders again.

    Such a rewarding hobby.

I like my Saturday morning water changes as well, but my dogs make it a bit loud and annoying when I go out to turn on the hose. I love the dogs though because they are always right there and want my attention even if it gets annoying at times. I like my fish for almost the exact opposite reason...
