this isn't a trick but...i was at my big al's and this guy looks at the display tank and its got angels, tetras, rainbows and a betta, and he asks "is this saltwater?" the manager says no and he goes "even this one?". he was pointing at the friggen betta. that guy then gets the manager to show him every fish in the store, and then starts handing out advice like hes been in the hobby for 40 years. people like that bug me.

ha ha that one is kinda funny

but you reminded me of this couple that came in and was telling me they had a 29 with 3 angles in it and then they just disappeared. i asked them if there was anything else in the tank and the guy goes over to the bichirs and says one of these. so i tell them that that is what ate it, and the guy tells me that that's not possible because those only eat algae. i couldn't talk him out of this idea, so i just told him i couldn't sell him anything.

I used to work at petsmart for nearly a year. I saw,was part of, or witnessed a lot of interesting things.

One I remember was this guy who came in weekly and bought 50 or so large feeders. Of course I asked him what he was feding and he said arowanas. Sence not many people around me keep fish like that I was interested.

After talking to him for a bit I learned that he had a 125 with 2 blacks and 3 silvers in it, each about 13". He also said he was going to buy a 300 gal from glass cages. He sneaked in at the end how he was going to also try and get himself an asian aro.

Couple months pass, then he comes back in and tells me he got the tank and an asian aro! I was pretty impressed, said he had paid around $4500. Few more weeks pass and I talk to him again. I guess he had talken a 18" pacu from a friend. Well, the thing freaked out and darted through the end pannel of the tank. ALL the fish died including the asian aro. At that point I just shook my head

The other day I got fish in at the store, including a 6in silver arrowana. When it came time to let it out, there were a couple customers behind me and as soon as it hit the water, the guy behind me said "Look honey, it's a platypus!" :nilly: What am I supposed do do with that? I didn't say anything, I just walked away, and ate like 15 starburst's to calm me down. :naughty:

You know, even though this poor bastard meant well, I cant help but feel that it served him right.

Milkman told me about an LFS that I had never been to before, so today I went. I overheard the owner telling someone that it bugs him how no one knows anything about fish.

A little time passed and the owner came up to me to see if I needed help. They had three baby pbass that I wanted, and I asked him what kind they were. He said, "Oh, these are just regular peacock bass." So I said "so they are monos?" He then said, "Oh no, they are just regular pbass. We have some temensis' over here."

I left it at that :screwy:

i wonder what would have happened if you tryed to correct him, he'd probly just say you don't know anything about fish and walk away. what a funny guy.

Yeah, I figured if anyone had seen the invoice, it would have been him. He goes to Tampa and Clearwater to hand pick the oddballs that he gets. You would think by now he would know that there are three "regular" types of pbass that look the same when they are babies.

I had been in another LFS looking at some large flowerhorns. They were in a tank that previously had an assortment of South American Cichlids. I know because that was etched into the top frame of the tank. So the guy came up to me and asked if I needed help. For conversation, I asked him what kind of fish they were. He said very sternly that they were South American Cichlids.

Dear Fellows ;)

I believe there is a deeper problem that has to be solved by professionals like us.

All of us lfs workers get to see the hobby in such a different way.

Of course we got a better inside view to professional issues concerning fishkeeping a normal hobbyist cannot get. But can you remember the time you started your hobby, I guess noone of us is a studied fishbiologist;)

I assume all of us tortured many innocent fishes until we grew ourselves in that hobby.

In my opinion of course there are too many idiots just wanting everything "cheap and fast" and a living being like a fish is no hamburger consumable in a drive-in.

But we have to differ between innocent Rookies and selfish chuckleheads.
And it is quiet difficult not to treat the potential good-fishkeepers-in-the-future the same way as all dumbasses because it is so difficult to recognize them.

Even a professional cannot know everything about any fishkind, so mistakes are possible and worst consequence is the misunderstanding.

So, if anyone really wants to improve the situation it is necessary that we all have to figure out the misunderstanding between the differnt parties of prof´s and hobbyists, so that we all can discuss on equal level.

This whole thread is quiet amusing  but actually too superficial to change anything. :(

haha props to you Ander you make some good points. I mean, yea I've witness tons of ppl at my lfs that should not be in the buisness of taking care of fish at all, but man I hate to say that I probably started out as one of them. When I first got into the fish hobby it started with a ten gallon tank and some stupidity. I've grew up and learn from there.
