Last night I was testing my water and It came up with a reading of 5ppm and it was irritating as hell to me.....I may just be anal about it but it made me curious as to what other members try to keep thier nitrate levels at in thier own tanks between water changes? So what is optimal to you?

50ppm is usually ok i aim for 30 ppm

some tanks run at 200ppm .........

its never zero is a well cycled tank

ammonia and nitrite should be 0 :)

5ppm is extremely low and it's near impossible to get to 0ppm in a healthy tank.. Most fishkeepers have a reading between 20-40ppm..

5ppm is about ideal,if it was 0 Id wonder if your tank was cycled.some of my tanks range up to 20 when a w/c is due

I realise it won't be at zero..... I just like it to be low enough that the test kit can't read it. I assumed between 10-40 is what most tanks run at but with the way some people stock tanks and they way some do W/C's I figured there would be a good range of higher and lower numbers.

my 125 is always between 0 and 5 (cant measure in between w/ my test kit, but its always slightly darker than the 0 reading). i only have 3 small fish in there, though.
