What are some ways (other than posting pictures up here) to distinguis between a shortnose and an ali gar?

I bought a little guy for 15 labled as a shortnose aligator gar...(thanks LFS)

Either way, if it is an ali, I do have room on the acreage for a pond for him/her, but I"m really hoping it's a shortnose.

Poly, Jordan and crew...help!

Two questions:
1. Does it have a white stripe dorsally on the snout?

2. Does it have a continuous Dark dorsal stripe?

I'll check on those when I get home tonight and post pics tomorrow morning. Whatever it is, it's growing well though. Had him for just under two weeks and has grown 1/2 an inch

no matter what type of gar it is, it will grow fairly quickly up to about 12"+ (typically). will be waiting for pics!
