sand substrate v.s filter

a question here..
If i was to use internal filter,
can i use sand as a substrate?
how effective will it compared to the other kind of filter

Howdy,

The only time you have problems with sand and a filter is when sand enters the intake. Simply make sure to have your filter positioned high enough to prevent that from happening.

HarleyK's right. Just make sure you have a couple of inches from the top of the sand to the filter intake.

Weekly water changes like normal. I just skim the surface of the sand with my python to remove any waste. Don't stick the siphon too far down or you will suck up a ton of sand. When I'm done, I move the sand around with my hand to release any gas build up inside the sand.
