Bio load will most likely be heavy. Stingray pond. How many pot scrubbies do I need to be slightly overkill on a 1500 gallon system? Is there a rule of thumb? like 1 scrubbie per gallon or something?

I could never get a good answer on this people would rather argue about all the variables then try to assist in getting a decent number.

So I settled on a total of 1940 scrubbies.

2 cases of scrubbies or 960 are going to be in my 44 gallon garbage can wet/dry and I think I can get the remaining 960 scrubbies to be submerged media in my sump. I won't know for sure until I drain my salt water and make a few mods to the sump.

Since I couldn't get a good answer on wet/dry vs submerged and a count I decided to just do both.

wha??? Geez man... these are supposed to be a CHEAP alternative..... I don't even have a thousand......let alone 2000.I'm buying them at a dollar store. $1 gets you 6. Is there a cheaper place to buy them?

I got mine from http://www.dollardays.com/i54980-wholesale-scouring-pads.html but I see they are sold out at the moment.

Ended up being 10 for a dollar or 50 bucks a case.

There was a guy in WI selling a case of these a few months back, not sure if he ever sold them or now.I can also try to get a better feel for what I will need maybe I will have some extras.

Still cheaper than bio balls but I couldn't get any confirmation on quantity so I just said to hell with it and went over board. lol

I'm guessing I'm somewhere around 700. Seem to be taking up about 60 gallons of bio tower space..... Hard to tell with the 30 gallons of bio-balls mixxed in with them. And here I thought I was allready to the point of being overkill. I might have to add another Rubbermaid 150 gallon "sump" lol.

If you don't mind me intruding, whats the deal with crubbies? I had never seen or heard of these being used for fish tanks before this site. How are they compared to bio balls?

"S" crubbies? LOL......I can't really say for sure. This will be my first adventure utilizing them. I have heard they actually have more surface area than bio balls.....so I would tend to think that they would work just as well if not better...... And the colors.....eh well, nevermind.

You have a good point......
I think I might have to try these babies out on my 75g sump for my 300g.

My conclusion........1 scrubbie per gallon should be plenty of overkill.I firmly believe that since my pond will only be housing 4 rays for starters that I have achieved enough overkill to make them happy. Now they need to make me happy and gimme pups. And whoever is cramming 200 scrubbies in a cubic foot is pretty good. Must have to smash them proper. The way mine are packed I think I only get 100/ft3. Will definetly research this more..........
