What is the minimum filtration for a 125?

I bought my parents a 125 gallon Long. Other than a very Monster koi pond, the biggest they ever had was a 55 gallon. I bought the tank, stand, and canopy, but I told them they are on their own for filtration etc. My dad asked what kind of filtration he would need for it. I suggested the Fx5 which is exactly what i will get for my 125 tall when I get done refurbishing it. I told him it is 900 gallons a hour and he argued that he could have it well filtered with way less than 900 gph. I personally have 800 gph just on my 75 gallon and will have about 2000 gph on my 220.
What do you think? What would you suggest to my Dad for a 125 long?

Depends of what the stocking of the tank will be. A very lightly stocked planted tank would require minimal filtration. Personally I like to go with multiple smaller filters instead of a single large filter.

I would go with a Ac110 and a eheim 2217 and maybe add another AC110 if it will be heavily stocked

I have a 125 and run a fluval fx5, one AC110, and 4 powerheads for circulation. Tank stays clean and my cichlids seem to be very happy. shop ebay for some used stuff.

There is no such thing as minimum or maximum filtration, it's all dependent on stocking and tank setup. Post up what he wants to put in the tank and how he wants to set it up and you'll get more appropriate answers.

Absolute minimum filtration for that tank would be 1 air driven Hydro 5 sponge filter.

over there boi
start with a ac110 then ad a rena xp3 as stocking increases. i believe multiple filters are a better way to go than just 1 large one. imo
