In some cases (often with rapid temperature change) excessive bubbles can lead to super saturation of dissolved gasses. Where this can be a problem is that gas bubbles can form on the gills of your fish. In extreme cases, this can reduce the ability of the fish to breathe and it can cause suffocation.
