there's no such thing as a "better" gar my friend. only aspects of keeping the fish/study of the fish that we prefer. and when it comes down to these 2 species, there isn't much of a difference.

almost no difference between captive specimens. only way of confirming species is getting locality, or cutting them up.

there are a couple different questions here, most of them ridiculous -

"which do you choose?" - this of course is personal preference, and i would honestly say this is a legit question asking members' opinions as to which species they like personally.

"which is better?" - this is asinine as there is not necessarily a "better" gar amidst the group...there are just personal preferences.

"which one gets bigger?" - that is also a relative question when we're talking about the two most closely related species in the extant group.

answering the first question, however, (and of course with plenty of bias)...spotted all the way given the choice :) --
