I keep seeing pictures of tanks without gravel or sand in the tank. I always thought you need one or the other in the tank???

I am planning on doing a Dwarf Cichlid tank (29g)

What do I need to put in there? How many fish can I house??

thanks

You don't really need it. It may carry some beneficial bacteria, but I don't think enough to affect anything. But I think it's more natural and comfortable for the fish. I really like sand. Mixing it isn't bad either. What kind of Dwarfs were you planning on? I think with Dwarfs, you should have some type of substrate.

what kind of dwarf cichlids you looking at??? barebottom tanks are easier maintence and a prefference for some people... i use BB tanks for my rays... i would add a small dark gravel for cichlids dark gravels usually make the fish look better.... what were you planning for a filter???

bare bottom or gravel/sand is really just personal preference. it all comes down to what you like because the fish will be fine either way
