What can I do, or add to improve my biological filtration, I'm thinking of making a sump mainly for it, but if there is a easier way I would like to take that route.

Throw me some ideas, and what you think :)

(On a side note, I have the fluval fx5 with its basic 3 stage media on a 225 gallon tank.)

-EDIT- Just figured out I posted in the wrong area...sorry :(

Very much south..
I do not see many ways around it. But some guys are experimenting with plants only tanks. Just take a look at Severum1's thread " My greenhouse for fish".

Of course it all depends on the size of the thing you want to do...

My personal view is that a single FX5 provides a somewhat insufficient capacity for biological media with the tank size you describe, assuming a robust population of fish. However, to squeeze out as much biological activity as you can from that single FX5, I would eliminate all pads and chemical media from the three media baskets and fill each chamber with Ehfisubstrat Pro.

that sounds like it will turn into a nitrate pump unless cleaned constantly. which will do no good for BB. unless you run a foam prefiler on the inlet.

Sponge filters work if you don't mind the clutter in your tank.
Bingo. Best bang for the buck when it comes to bio filtration IMO:)

All of my filters are nitrate pumps that are fueled by ammonia:)

right but what i am sayin is removing the mechanical filtration will cause the bio filtration to become poo logged.

Gotcha, I'm just being difficult:) I usually have to jab at the "nitrate factory" comments haha.
