Common Name : Arapaima Gigas

other common names : Gigas ,gig ,arapamia ,Pirarucu ,paiche

Family : Osteoglassidae

Sub-family : Heterotidinae

Genus : Apapamia

Species : A.gigas

Description :
The arapaima, is a South American tropical freshwater fish. It is one of the larger freshwater fish in the world, reportedly with a maximum length up to 4.5 m (14.75 ft.) and weight up to 200 kg (440 lb.). The maximum weight and length is disputed. It is the largest freshwater fish in South America. As one of the most sought after food fish species in South America, it is often captured primarily by handheld nets for export, by spearfishing for local consumption, and, consequently, large arapaima of more than 2 m are seldom found in the wild today. In the Camden aquarium in Camden, New Jersey, arapaimas are on exibit along with the Arowanas and other species.

The diet of the arapaima consists of fish and other small animals, including birds. The fish also has the ability to breathe air from the surface due to a lung-like lining of its throat, an advantage in oxygen-deprived water that is often found in the Amazon River. This fish is therefore able to survive extensive drought periods by gulping air and burrowing in the mud or sand of the swamps.

It is also considered an aquarium fish, although it obviously requires a large tank in surplus of 1000-7000 gallons and ample resources such as good filtration and heathy food

Tank size listed is too small. Actual size of dimensions is better than volume use when it comes to Arapaima.

How is a five foot long fish going to turn around in a six foot wide tank? ;)
And that size is just the first 2 years. How about after that?

Offering to an aquarium rarely works. Most of the time they don't want fish you can't care for. ;)

The nearest one to me had one in an extremely large tank and they had to find it a new home in the end as their tank was not even big enough, so I agree with the above, why would they want to give themselves the headache even 2-3 years down the line?

Just to clarify... 6.5x5x0.8m set-up (100% full) 6,878 gallons ... it would be possible to keep for a VERY long time. After 2m, the growth should stop dramatically (not like in the first two years).....

In any case, it would need a growout before becoming suitable for 7000g set-up.

But granted, for life, a larger set-up is probably a must
