I see no use for one in freshwater tanks if they are properly maintained.But hey it could be just me.
reasons not to have one
bulbs need changing every 6 months to a year
they need to be taken apart and cleaned every month or so
and any problem they fix should be fixable by other means
and they add heat to the water
I have been keeping fish or around fishkeeping for 20+ years and never had use for one -Anne

uv steralizers can destroy nuisence floating algae and micro organisms that in habit the water, i use one on my 55g fresh and it does not effect the fish in any way and there is never green water in that tank.

My experiences with the UV sterilizers are all positive! They have always worked great and the results were SPECTACULAR. If you really need it, yeah I will def recommend.
