Many distributors are now calling real gars, particularly Florida / spotted imported from Asia, Marble gars or Marble lined gars. Common name is useless and does not describe the fish. These common Names have no relevance to a particular fish anymore. Just like Alligator gar is about as useless as a common name when it comes to figuring out the majority of Hobby Gars. LFS and distributers call all gars alligator if they can...

The Gar hobby really does require one to take the time to look up known ID from reliable sites and individuals. Common names will only rarely give you an ID from an LFS... Give it up thinking a LFS or distributor (or what seems 90% of hobbyists THEMSELVES) will get these fish right.
