first off, i read they need a high range pH. my pH out of the tap is really high but it always ends up dropping down to around 6 within a few weeks between water changes. so, first question: is the pH that important or will they acclimate like most fish do?

second question. im brainstorming for ideas of what to do with my 20 long at the moment. if i turned it into a planted tank would it be ok if i had just one lab in there? and yes it would have the tank all to itself.

last question here; not sure what my water hardness is, is it that important?

You need to add some type of buffer to the tank to help the PH stabilize. Crashing every week wouldn't be good for them. As far as a desired PH level, consistent is the best way to go. Keep it the same all the time and you should be fine. Some fish prefer hard water, some soft. I have kept africans in both without problems. It becomes more important when breeding.
