From all the pics i have seen the Gars spend lot of time at the bottom but i always thort they were top swimming fish?

in reality they spend time at all levels of the water column...it's often listed as a 'top-water' dwelling fish in the wild because that's when people most often see them...when they are at the surface gulping air, swimming, congregating, spawning, etc. people don't often see them when they are on the bottom (mainly because a lot of general observation is from the water's surface), so they are classified as top-dwelling.

hope that helps. in aquaria, juveniles will often spend much of their time at the surface or, if on the bottom, usually in some sort of cover. as they get older they will utilize all levels of the water column...and this of course varies with the individual too--
