yesterday i was calling around to all of my LFS, because thursday's they get there cichlid shipments, and this guy tells me he has a wild caught 3 1/2 inch Black Nangu Compressiceps. i almost hit the floor. this fish is extremly rare and for it to be wild caught was just iceing on the cake. after work i drove down there to check him out, the store was packed (weird, fish stores are never very busy) anyway the owner was not in but his wife was there, she showed me the fish but she didnt speak very good english, so i couldnt ask all of the proper questions. the fish is brilliant but i dont think its a Nangu, the head is not black enough. none the less a black compressiceps is pretty rare at least from my point of view. what i need to know is: is this a Nangu? Male or female? will his head become more black over time? was this fish stressed out being wild caught, is that why his head is not pure black? has anyone ever had this fish before? i can not find very much info about a black comp online, please help.

PS: sorry about the pic quality, i had just put him in the tank and i was very excited

Dunagan is at work until later.

Looks like a black comp to me. Check out some of the different variants in the pull down.

Its a Calvus (compreci type cichlid)
its not a calvus, notice there are NO white spots. and look at the head, the high sloping says its a comp.

how rare are black comps? ive never seen one and there is very little info and pics online. i have a black calvus and a yellow comp in the same tank, and all 3 fish look so different (body wise). the head on the black comp is so much bigger than the others. how typical is it to have morphs of this kind of fish?

There are two types of black. One looks a lot like a calvus with spots and all. The other is black. It can be found all over the lake, so I would not call it rare.
this fish does not have spots but its not all black either. is this a Nangu Comp? or would u just call this a black comp? ive never had a wild caught fish, i could tell the difference as soon as i put the fish in the tank by how it acts. also will a black comp mate with a yellow comp?

there is always the possibility that they could breed.
