Hello,

I need advice on Ammonia and Nitrite. Ever since I picked up 6 dats ranging from 6-8” and 1 stingray about 7-8”, I can seem to get the Ammonia and Nitrite down to 0. Currently the Ammonia reading is under .25 but above 0 and the Nitrite is about 1. How toxic are these reading to my fishes? Nitrate is about 20. My tank is 170 and I current have 305 and 405 filled to the max with bio-media and AC110 filled with what it came with. I have been changing 5 buckets of water every 2 days.

Current stock for the tank is - 1 17" arowana, 7 dats 6-8", 1 stingray , and 1 5" flagtail

I feed the arowana and dats every 2-3 days with about 6 medium size shirmp. I feed the stingray 2 times in the morning and night with sinking carnivore.

Thanks for any input.

It sounds like you started a mini cycle when you added the dats and ray, that's a lot of bio mass to add at one time. It could also mean that you need to reduce your stocking! You have quite a few fish that grow pretty big, and big fish produce a lot of waste.

It's been month since I put the dats and ray in the tank. It take that long to cycle?Bacteria doubles every 24 hours, shouldn't cycling have caught already?

I would put in some Amquel + to bring down the ammonia/nitrate/nitrites right away. Then I would add media and rocks from an already established tank to boost the BB. I would also put in some Seachem Stability. Many people here say it's a scam, but I've used it and it worked for me.

Since its been a month, it sounds to me like you may not have enough biomedia to support the load... The Fluval 305 & 405 canisters dont hold a huge amount of media. I would say to add another biomax bag in your AC110, to make just one sponge & 2 bags of biomax. Otherwise, maybe add another AC110, but fill it all the way to the top with biomedia.
