Heaters in a sump

I've always been curious, if you were to put your heaters in your sump would you need just as many heaters or could you go with less, itd seem to me that if you have a 55 gallon sump you would just need a heater large enough for the sump, but it seems to me like everyone still matches their heater quantities to what their tank would need. Let me know why that is.

I guess thats true, it just seems to me that the heaters would have to be in the tank itself then

The water is constantly moving, so it's n ot like you have tank water, and sump water, all the water kind of adds together to be one big mass for lack of a better way of explaining it. So basically you dont match your heater to your tank, or your sump, you match it to the total amount of water you have.
