I see people that have no gravel or substrate, how does that affect water quality & biological balance in the tank? Also whats the amount of gravel to have in a tank i have about 4" i think thats to much. its a 90 gal

I have a bare bottom tank also my nitrates stay around 5.0.
Only way to go with a tank full of big fish. When I vac. the tank
I get about 98% of the waste and food out. Only leave what gets
stirred up.

People usually do this in overstocked tanks, breeding tanks or growout tanks to make cleaning easier. But personally i don't think i would go bare bottom ever. It also helps to reduce nitrates. As for BB, it has no effect on that. The filters still have loads of BB in them to compensate.
