i bought a dark brown 4inch teacup ray last month. over the weeks, the color on it has been getting lighter and fading to a light brown. is it beacuse i use white sand and the breeder had it in a barebottom tank? is it normal to change colors?

water parameters:
ammonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate-40 (i know its high, i just did a water chang after i saw that)

Yes, most likely it's your light sand.

mine have lightened up since purchase, i'm using a light sand for substrate. I'm assuming their color lightens or darkens to their environment, to better camouflage them with their surroundings.
