I have heard bad things about rena...if you were going to go the fluval route, I would recommend the fx5...its pretty cheap on amazon, and gets great reviews.

Otherwise I always recommend eheim. They have always been the best, and I think that they will for a long time to come. Dead silent.

Eheim 2026, 2126 or a 2250. Depends on what your stock requires. I think the large filtration capacity of the 2250 and the water movement will be good for potentially large fish.
And dead silent.

I wouldn't use any canister filter for a reef tank. Most people use a sump with liverock. Or they have a FOWL which is a tank with liverock in the display as well as live sand.

I wouldnt say cheaper...setting up a sump from scratch can be costly. I will aggree that it is the way to go if you can do it. But...if you want a canister I would probably get an eheim like I said.

Canuck runs a canister on one of his FOWLRs I think...its an fx5?

Yea i run an fx5.

PVC 7$
tub 10$
drawersystem 10$
Pump 40$

Thats 80$ for a sump that could run a 200g

OR get 2 fx5's for the price of one eheim. Canisters are nice to have for a predator or FOWLR tanks, they can be moved easily and set up quick. Though once you make a sump its just as easy to make another one from walmart for 20$

My sump that filters at least 8lbs of food a week cost me 160-180$... overflow, sump, refugium with light, and media. Thats pump included too. 2400gph with head height.
