I am thinking of converting my 30 gallon tank into a saltwater tank. What I need to know is if my HOB filter would work ok for the tank and a short list of stocking options. Any help would be appreciated :)

What type of HOB filter do you have?

Are you wanting to do FOWLR only, or do you want corals too?

ok to start your tank you are going to need
-sand
-salt
-liverock(atleast 1-2pounds per gallon)
-filter(hob should work short term you may need to get something stronger later)
-lighting

ok to start
1) clean tank well through
2) mix saltwater and add
3) add livesand
4) add liverock( you dont need all of it now but it speeds up your cycle)
5) turn filter on and wait about a week
form this point on start to test for the cycle to complete. when its done you can think of your stocking options. in a tank that size I would recommend
1xlawnmower blennie
1-2 clownfish (o)
2 firefish
1 spotted hawkfish
1 cleaner shrimp (coral banded ect)
next you need a clean up crew this is to help eat uneaten food and keep things in check
10 hermits
5 turbo snails
20 nass. snails
1 emerald crab
1 brittle star
thats it. good luck for you adn pm if you need any more help

Had an aqua clear that worked great for me. As stated what kind do you have? 30 gals you could do the usual clownfish pair or damsels? Gobies? There are some options

of course it does.! Thanks

You gota love it how they punch these out
there's an acronym for everything these days.

On the subject, HOB filters , biowheels or anything even resembling them, just dont belong anywhere near a reef setting or any sort. Sure, FO maybe, & granted, they were designed for a simple purpose, but i dont think salt was one of them. Its going to sound harsh, however in my opinion, they are for the pretenders in this category.

I agree, I dont really care for HOB's on saltwater tanks, but they do function and can be modded to function as a fuge which would be great for a salt.

Yea, bio-wheels are pointless on a salt though, fish only or reef.
