some LFS sell the black foam for sponge filters in bulk that you can cut to the size you need. you can buy the ATI Hydro V kit, for $10 from http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/index.html and for $2 more you can get the hydro V pro that has the black sponge that i like best.

Excellent article. Definitely worth the read. I have never even considered them until now.

    great article!

while pondering maximizing the bio filtration in my sump, I thought instead of merely submerging media (which I think is not all it's cut out to be), I would use sponge filters. I run 4 of them in my 55g wet/dry on a huge bioload. they are great for extra filtration and I will always use some sort of sponge filter in my tanks. the benefits are too great not to.

Great idea. Also a great option for people who don't want to bother with trying to hide a sponge if they hate the way they look (most people )

I've used sponges ever since I started keeping fish. I mostly used the ones from Jehmco linked above.

On my 10Gs, I've switched over to using those cheapie blue, triangle cut ones. I got them at a great price and they work a lot better than I remember. I might even say better than the ones from Jehmco, just because they have a finer foam.

I have one air pump for my whole 10G setup. The pump is a bit overkill. But, I like this because I can run a couple lines to other tanks should the need arise.
