think aligator gar would be the most aggresive one. not sure about the tank size.....cos heard that they could grow very large and that a pond is needed for them.

but gars are fantastic fish to keep :)

Even the smaller true gars are around 24+ and at 24 inches when adult and need a tank at least 30-36 inches wide due to their scalation they need ample turning room.Or simply put gars don't bend as well as other fish -Anne

so to say that we need at least a tank with a width of 2.5 feet and above for a fully grown gar to be comfy.

but there has been debate that fishes that are kept in an aquarium rarely grows to its full potential in terms of size.

That's true, and that's why Lepisosteus platostomus (shortnose gar) "only" hits 2' in aquariums. In the wild, they get to close to 3'. If your tank is 30" wide or more, go for a shortnose... as xrtg said, they are fantastic fish. None of them are very aggressive though, so if you're looking for an aggressive fish, gars don't fit the bill. Generally the only species that's remotely aggressive is the alligator gar, and even they aren't too bad.

What i'm saying is a 24inch gar need 30-36 inches to comfortably turn around in
Gars are not as flexible as other fish species and need a fair amount of turning room-Anne
