Sumps are easier to maintain and hold more Bio.. I use both and both work well, but sumps you can change out mechanical filter pads easier.

Use a sump, bigger the better imo. Fill it with bio and mech media also it keeps all your equiptment out of the main system like heaters and pipe work.

somehow I don't see using a HOB on a tank that houses a ray.

lol you would have to have ac110's all the way around your tank, even then it wouldnt be enough filtration.

fluval FX5 or Marieneland! if your worried about bio then add different ways to bio filter. like a sponge filter you can hide. a sump may be loud
