I was at one of the chain pet stores today and over heard a conversation between a customer and employee. I didnt' hear the type of fish but here was the basic gist of the conversation....no you'll only want to get one of those fish for your 5 gallon tank as they get to be about a foot long and grow fast. :irked:

Some people who work in chain pet stores really don't know their fish. In petsmart i overheard someone walking into the fish station complaining that their blood parrots weren't breeding. In a fish specialist store she would have been instantly told that blood parrots were sterile and cannot breed but what did this guy say... "Dont worry I have bred blood parrots before they normally take their time!" *facepalm* I wish i had said something but i was too shocked by this blatant lie to do anything. Whats the morale of the story - Dont trust what people say in stores that aren't specialist stores.

THEY WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE A SALE!!! Its true, the do it all the time. Petsmart is the worst store to buy ANY pet from. They are unreliable, stubborn, useless and jus plain stupid when it comes to fish. They have info on the little "cards" about fish which is COMPLETELY wrong and they will ARGUE that the cards are in fact right, even though there are tons of websites that say differently. I have gone in there alot when I first started in the hobby. I asked all the right questions and followed their advice and got some "recommended" fish for my tank, went home and did some research(which i should have doen before) and realized I had five fish that would grow over 2 feet long!!! I know, I shouldnt put this all on them. I do believe the customer has some responsibility here too. I shouldnt have bought ANY fish without doing some research. But, I did tell them what size my tank was, what I wanted, and what kind of equipment I had running on the tank. I also told them I was a newbie, and that these were my first non goldfish fish. I left it up to them to provide me with some advice and their so called professional knowledge and ended up getting screwed. Since then, I no longer listen to anything they tell me, I dont buy anything that I dont have knowledge of. The only good thing thaat came outta that first Petsmart visit was that the new fish gave me the leverage to get a bigger tank. LOL

Yet with your vast amount of knowledge you didn't intervene? Fail to see what good is knowing something is wrong and not acting on it.

Nice job  on doing nothing.
