Hello,

Ive been setting up a 560 gallon native freshwater tank. For filtration I am using a large wet/dry. I would like to add a filter for better mechanical filtration. I have been looking at pool filters. How well do they work in an aquarium setting? What kind should I go with(cartridge, DE, sand)? How would you hook it up to a tank?

Thanks!

With appropriate sized filter socks, you can have a strong mechanical component in your wet/dry filter. That said, if you are determined to have other mechanical filtration, check out Pentair Rainbow RTL spa filters. I've run two little RTL-25s on my 300 gallon tank. I love, love love them. Love them so much, I'm going with six RTL-100s on my big tank. The filter cartridges are made out of 100 micron material.

Here's my little set up

Here's an RTL-100

Here's an amazing coral display tank that uses an RTL-like filter (front left)

The 1350 gallon display tank is amazing. The thread on it is incredible

Here's a thread from another MFK member who uses RTL type filters on his 765 gallon tank

I write "RTL-like", because there are other filters like the Pentair Rainbow RTLs that take the same filter cartridges and basically look identical to the RTLs. The mechanical filters in both the above threads are RTLs or similar filters.

I have to disagree, pool filter are great for aquariums. For perfectly clear water nothing beats DE filters. The smallest DE pool filter I could find is the Hayward EC40 which you can pick up from Amazon for a great price. I haven't found anything that comes anywhere close to the EC40 for mechanical filtration. Considering that it is designed for a 10,000 gallon pool it will handle your 560 without a problem.

Perfectly clear water always.
Very low maintenance.
Very low cost of ownership due to recycling the DE powder with the dislodging handle on the top.
Works well with 2hp pool pumps.
Works well with tiny little Quiet One 4000 pump.

Check out the links in my sig for more details.
