I saw some alligator gars at my LFS today and some have darker coloration than the others..
All of them are about the same length, around 6"
Is this caused by stress or male/female indication?
Do they lose the "spots" on their fins and body as they mature?

-even gator gars show quite a bit of pattern variation...some are darker than others, some change as they age. nothing out of the ordinary really. if one looks more appealing to you over another, go with what you like. at the same time, however, be aware of the responsibilities that come with taking on an alligator gar. Florida gars are by far more manageable and generally appropriate for those looking to keep gars--

Chances are they are Florida gars. Check out the sticky's to see which gar species it most resembles.

I agree with the the other post . I have an Alligator Gar and yes he is different . He eats everything Or kills everything I put with him. Try a different type of Gar, I like the one that I have and I will keep him because I always wanted one. However If I could do it over I would get a Florida or spotted Gar.
