in the wild P. Pangasius move to brackish water(or so I have read) as they age and I wonder if the fresh water environment keeps them smaller but still viable, as is the case with some landlocked salmon, though pangasius are not truly anadromous.
Additionally, it's possible that aquaculture farms sell their slower growing stock for the pet trade.
As for Necro's old pangs, the two definitely looked different. Tail shape(one more angular fork, the other round), head shape(one flatter on top and more square at the front, other more round), distance from eye to tip of snout, and hump were all different between the two. Sounded like they were from two different stores and it's possible different distributors and different farms producing different species. That marble x RTC was gorgeous, hope they are available again sometime.

2', they were also highly stunted. Heads pretty big in comparison to the bl. They had popeye, and were housed in a small tank for their size. THe tank was also crammed full of sharp driftwood, and huge lava rocks. The catfish had cuts all over their bodies. I removed all that crap to give them more space and changed their food to shrimp, and floating cichlid pellets as they had an emaciated oscar in there as well. Changed the filtration so they were getting at least 4x per hour turnover. When I moved everything looked good, but I guess they went back to the old lady who was doing it before and she switched it all back.
poor fish probably look horrible now. Wish I could rescue them but they are in a casino and they are like mascots I guess.

I wonder if this also differenciates seperate species of Pangasius?
I have seen a documentary where someone was catching adult, ~3' I.D sharks very far away from the sea in the Mekong rapids. Maybe one species, as you said, is anandromous to a certain extent and the other(s) is/are not. This whole discussion shows how little we know about this interesting genus ( some of us may know Paroons are my favourite catfish

I have ID shark, I think it's in too small of a tank. I didn't buy the fish, I kind of inherited it. Frankly, I prefer to give it to someone that could take better care of it. Anyone in the NYC/New Jersey area want a ID shark?

Welcome to MFK.
we have a buy and sell section. Go there and creat a new post labeled Free ID shark in the NYC/New Jersey area. Then post a pic or two and I'm sure someone will snatch it up with the large population around there. I commend you on trying to do the right thing so I hope this helps out. Let me know if you have trouble doing this as I can help more if needed. At least now you know that ID sharks can grow to 3'+ and that it needs a proper home. Thank you.

The first pic is how they normally look and the rest of them are after their large once a day feeding. As you can see they are very fat after that feeding! They don't normally look like that.
