I've had rainbow sharks for a total of 7 years so let me tell you they are definitely not a schooling fish. Most will tell you to just keep one per tank but I've kept 2 in a 29g with no problems. They are very fast and predator aware so if you want you can even successfully keep them with bigger cichlids. Right now I've got a rainbow shark with in a 55g with a 6.5" and a 4" Jack Dempsey with no problems. (of course it helps that my JD's are pretty docile and that I have a ton of hiding places in that tank) Rainbow sharks are my favorite tropical fish and will keep you thoroughly entertained.
