I'm leaning towards the Rena Smartfilter. Its for a 20g high tank. Both have pothos. 1 is planted community, the other breeding convicts. I have sand in my tanks, every single ac I have had with cichlids and sand, with the intake as short as possible the impellor goes bad within days. I have prefilter sponges on all filters. So that doesn't help. I usually just end up throwing the AC's out because the impellors suck. What do you think I should get?

What type of sand do you use I never had an issue with my ac70's sucking up sand.

AC70, the aquaclear filters are built like a tank. I've had mine for 8 years and it still works great.

Marina s20 filters are also pretty good, mine is super quiet.

I've been using AC's for many, many years, and some of them are over 10 years old. NEVER an issue. Do you stir up the sand a lot or something?

I only use pool filter sand I suspect the others you listed are not as heavy and get kicked up.
