Freshwater to salt

So, I was thinking about switching my 120 gallon to salt. If I sold the fish, switched the substrate to sand,but still kept the same water and added salt would the water still be cycled?

Also it should be noted that the bacteria primarily lives on surfaces in your tank, i.e. substrate and filter material. While it is present in your water, the amount is totally insufficient to even make a dent in ammonia and nitrite. Even if you removed your filter media and substrate and kept your tank freshwater you would still end up with "new tank syndrome"!
