How long could I house one in a standard 220? 72x24x30. I ask because my LFS is getting one in tomorrow @ 1" and I know for a fact other than a local car dealer ship( salt water) and and a local library( african cichlids) I have the biggest or one of the biggest tanks in our area. So basically I don't want to see this thing going to some kid that thinks its cool looking and stuffing it in a 55... How long could I get away with it?

In my opinion, it sounds like you are attempting to rationalize buying a fish you know you shouldn't.

Do you still have those cichlids in your avatar? The Cat will eventually make them lunch...are you ok with that?

If said fish store brings in a couple Arapaima, Pacu, Gator Gars and Bumblebee Groupers are you going to rescue them as well?

But to answer your question, I would say 1.5 years to 2 years tops.

For when he gets a bit too big for the 220g, a VERY cheap alternative to a outdoor pond or say an actually 1000-2000+gallon tank, would be an Intex Pool. That is if you have the room to put one in your house somewhere. I am lucky enough to have an extra, ground-level room large enough and unused that I will be putting a 10'x30" intex to house my RTC once he outgrows my 180g.

10' Pool: Under $200.
