What is the largest catfish that can be housed in a 210

Hi,

I was wondering what would be the largest catfish that could be housed in a 210 gallon for life (tank size 7' x 2' x 2')?

Something that would be fairly active and would be owner responsive.

I look forward to your sugestions.

Do you want a predator cat or just a catfish? A vulture catfish might work if your lucky enough to get a genetically smaller 1 if not you can keep it for quite a long time, I have known people to keep them in a 2 foot wide tank with no problems and sounds exactly what your looking for.

If your going to get a vulture catfish you cant have like 5 other large tankmates. Vulture catfish would be like borderline, definitely as big as you could get, but it would have to be the only bottom dweller at full size. You could have other bottom dwellers only while the fish is small. Once it reaches full size theres simply no room for other bottom dwellers.

+1 ^^ I assumed it was going to be a species tank because you wanted the biggest that would fit, but you could still have a smaller species of arowana or something similar tho as long as its filtered well.

It's only pie in the sky at the moment, just wondering how I can change my 210 up.

It would be a single specimen set up.

I will have to do some research on vulture cats.

black devil cat would last a long time and is the only species tank cat i'd like personally...is it most aggressive catfish... probably? they are surpposed to max out at 28inch but probably take ages to hit that? anyone. i dont know much about them except they are killers and i want one one day!-)

I really really want 1 of these but can't talk my girlfriend into another tank lol I have heard that they will literally kill everything just because its there when they get big

Wyckiies are fine in a large tank/pond of at least several 1000 gal with a plethora of tank mates. In a small tank - that's true.

There are so many that can be recommended. For a single fish tank, it does not have an ideal footprint, which would have its length only 2x longer than its width. IMHO, the 2' width limits you to not-too-active cats that do not exceed 1' adult length, Total length (TL), not Standard length (SL).

You may wanna filter Planet Catfish's Cat-eLog of >3000 cats by size and read and see what strikes your fancy (use "same", "near", or "nearer" links in the Size section).

Depending on your setup most cats will be non active. If you don't provide shelter(driftwood/rocks/caves) cats are more active. It's when you have shelter/decor that cats seek coverage and hide hence non active. Cats are a lot more active without shelter/decor. Some cats are skittish so those will stress out without shelter/decor. But I'm assuming you're looking to stay clear from those kind. GL.
