Seachem matrix

Has anyone used this product before or currently. If so what are your thoughts on it. Also has anyone noticed a drop on nitrates while using it. I am planning on doing an experiment for nitrates to see if it makes a difference. Ill make a thread when I start.

Seachem Matrix is just another brand of biological media and shouldn't reduce the nitrates any differently than any other comparable media. I use it in some of my canister filters and haven't noticed any difference in the nitrate reduction compared to filters using other brands of bio-media.

I use it in just about every system I own, including Pond Matrix on the big tank. Works just like any other Bio-media, such as Biomax, Substrat Pro, Bio Chem Stars, etc. Seems to be a little more cost effective than some and rinses pretty easily.

Seachem makes another media called De-Nitrate which seems to work initially for nitrate reduction, then just becomes another home for bb. I wouldnt waste my money on it.

I find it to be a great media for bio, but that's about it.

I did notice what seemed like some decrease in nitrates while using it in a way that minimal oxygen got to part of it. It was by no means conclusive and I wouldn't count on it for that.

On their website they claim it lowers nitrates. In the FAQ it says I haven't noticed a reduction in nitrates. Answer add more matrix. I'm still shuffling around fish between my tanks when I get that finalized ill conduct the experiment. Ill keep everyone posted

i also was planning on using there de-nitrate media as well but if ya read on there site it says that you should use pond matrix if it goes in a canister one works better for canister (high flow) and others for slower water flow sumps and such.... i have 2 basket in each fx5 filled with pond matrix... now regardless of what some people say i DID notice a drop in nitrates in my tank i have 20ppm in my tap water, and tank water would have 80ppm or so after a week so now i can leave my tank for AT LEAST 2 weeks and my nitrate stays at 20ppm for 2 weeks i didnt have a chance to clean the tank hence why it was 2 weeks but i normally do my tank every week but if ya read you'll notice it says it suppose drop nitrate but it will only drop to a certian point ... i think it works thats just IMO is all....im happy with it none the less tho

Keep in mind that nitrates are only one of the things you are removing at each water change. Still need to remove DOC's, so most folks use the nitrate reading more as a guide to set up a water change schedule.
