I keep extra AC sponges on hand for my filters and run the dirty ones through the washing machine with warm water on gentle cycle. These aren't the only filters on the tank so I have had no issues with mini cycles on the tanks.

I rinse my Biomax in tank water. The sponges I just wash outside with the hose. A nozzle on the hose can really help get the sponge super clean.
