Found you guys while researching big tank info for a rescue pet. Couple weeks ago it was in the single digits and we had some freak weather with rain, sleet, and snow that cause alot of flash flooding. Gf text me and tells me she found a turtle in her mom's backyard (no water around for a few miles but a drainage ditch). I said okay send me a pic of the turtle you found, we can hold onto it until the weather breaks.
So she sends me this
Luckily with the cold it was not very mobile, I have always wanted a common snapper; As a kid i had numerous reptiles including red ear sliders, iguanas, anoles, geckos, local snakes (gardner, corn, rat), a huge beautiful boa, and many warm blooded animals. So a snapper isn't beyond my (in my mind) skill set.
Had it in that large cardboard box for a few days, taking it out to let it soak in the tub for several hours on occassion, we joke that it's a ninja turtle as it always manages to escape from its housing. At one point with the lid folded into itself, the box flipped over on the floor, we find the box undisturbed and the turtle out of the box next to it sunning in the kitchen.
So i score a 150gal marineland with wood trim on CL for $200, its sitting outside, in the mud, glass lids and light. Take it home clean it up, looks like new and even the overhead light works . Start test filling it in the garage and it starts leaking . Drain and find a 6" seam in the lower pane silicon split, probably from having water sitting in it out in the cold freezing several times.
So currently i have a 50gal tote inside the aquarium, with river rock filling it to level, a heat lamp and large uva/b bult as well as a 300w heater inside the tote. Once we get a decent break in our weather I will pull the tank apart and reseal it for B.U.B (Big Ugly Bastard)
Now about me... Evansville resident all my life, sub 30, into off-road trail riding and fabrication so i've got plans to fabricate a stainless or aluminum tank to use this glass and basically build it into a 500gal setup.
I've already got one FX5 setup i scored on ebay for $200 NIB.
This aquarium stuff is cheap compared to my other hobbies.
New trailer I built for the new buggy, trailer is 1,700lbs, dual dexter torsion axles w/brakes
New buggy
6.0 GM LQ4, TH400, ORD mag doubler, NP205. Dana 60 front, Dana 70HD rear, 43"SX's on custom H1 wheels, ORI air struts.
Thanks for letting me ramble on!!!
Did I mention i can't leave **** alone?? My 88 GMC 3500 dually with a 454 has been stripped to the frame overall, has a custom tune on the fly computer. I can't leave well enough alone.
