When will it " come out of its shell" it's about 8" and it just tends to hide behind the intake all day til feeding time

i think it will depend on the fish, comfort level, tank mates, decor, lighting, etc.. I have a 15 incher that still hangs in the corner 90% of the time

Yeah this is my first dat so I didn't really know I've had him over a month n a half and he just hangs between my CFS700 intake and one I the emperor 400 intakes. There are plenty of caves and plants for
Him to hide in but he constantly stays in that corner til it's time to eat

Fine I have no aggression issues with any of my fish. The breeding Sevs are gone so its all good now

I love thin bars, but in my experience they are the most shy of all the datnoids .... your lucky that yours is stable, mine only get stable when they feed .... I just did a tank switch in the hopes that my thin bars come out more often, so I'd say its the nature of the fish ..... taking decorations out may force him out, and he may find that he likes it, or it may stress him out, but its an option to try .... other than that not sure what to tell you, its what they do
