Options For 20Gallon Long

I got my 20gallon long tank I found the other day set up, pool filter sand, and a AquaClear 50 filter for it. Now I am wondering what to do with it. I was leaning towards a planted but not sure about it since I don't have much money. Want to know what you would do with it.

Low tech planted with some super basic and cheap low light plants, along with some live bearers (my choice would be swordtails) so that you have a renewable food source for your monsters; as well as a "pretty" peaceful tank. :D

easy low light plants and a pair or trio of apistos is what id do. not very monster but they are cichlids. maybe a few cories and a few tetras also.
