Hey guys. I have a question, why is an aquariums length always a lot longer then the width? Shouldn't they be the same? I mean, the fish have to swim the width to. Eventually theyll get big and won't be able to turn thank to the tiny width. They just swim a super long length then won't be able to turn at the width.

Simple answer is money. It costs a lot more money to build a tank that's 8'X8' than it does to build a tank that's 8'x4'. Also the fact that a lot of people don't need the width on tanks like most of us on MFK do. People who keep tetra's don't need a tank that's 3 or 4 feet deep. It's supply and demand. If more people wanted wider tanks, more companies would build wider tanks.

Doorways seem to limit tank width also. I think three feet is the max width I would want any of my tanks.

Lets not forget the all important floor space, not many people (especially in Asia) have room to put in a 6x2 tank, let alone an 8x8 tank...

Bulid it in place, and it isn't an issue. Seriously, I agree that when viewing from a distance it is hard to see through 6 or 8 ft of water. This is especially true with glass tanks that tend to make it greenish. (Unless it's starfire glass)

But isn't it a lot better to have 8x8 tank then a 8x4? At least in 8x8 the fish can turn! They can't turn with 4 foot width!

That's why we don't keep fish in tanks that are too small. Ever heard of common sense..
