If you need to do daily 75% wc's and otherwise feed heavily and sypho out old food ( ie the fry aren't free swimming ect) then I always keep it to bare bottom at first.. water quality trumps any aestetic. once teh fry are free swimming and "sizeable" i put in some mature dw ( they like ot often pick at it) and just enough sand to cover the bottom. I usually do this by syphonign the fry into a bucket and during a 75% and adding the sand/dw filling it up 50%+ then dump them back in and top it off. or when i xfer them from their "wiggler" tank into something bigger.

+1 on barebottom - it will make your maintenance so much quicker. You'll be suprised how much leftover food particles you have not to mention how much fry poop!
