I made a DIY tower sump and overflow for my I used 3/4" piping cause when I found the tank it had a return spray bar under the sand. So I used part of that spray bar and the elbows for my plumbing. Yesterday I decided to open the two holes just to see if I could get more flow but the water isn't draining fast enough.I added piece of my water change hose with a aqua clear intake on the tank end of the hose. It helps but my pump is turned all the way down

U might have to drill a small hole on top of your intake tube ,to get all the air out, for a better syphon.
Closed systems with pumps don't need this. But syphon systems do.
It also prevents overflows when power goes out.
Worth a try!
But remember, 3/4 isn't very big and u can only get so much
