my heater looked exactly the same when I did a WC and forgot to turn it off...

my fault, not the heaters...

I never unplug equipment when I mess in my tank/sump. but that doesn't mean its the right thing to do... BUT if I saw something had a fault/was broken/etc then I would definitely unplug it before I took it out, common sense really I would think. why are you surprised that something made of glass, that was already cracked, broke more when thrown onto something solid? I have the same heater barring maybe wattage, has served me well for over a year.
