Multifasciatus and similis make colonies. Shell dwellers which are harem spawners (such as ornatapinnis) form somewhat of a colony (one male with multiple females).

If you had a surface swimmer, it might work, but typically, shellies can get pretty aggressive protecting their territory.

For a 2'x2', you could put three to four pair in there.
