I recently picked up a new venustus cichlid and I am having a hard time getting him to eat. He will take Hikari cichlid pellets but then spits them out. He also goes to the bottom and does the same with sinking carnivore. Any suggestions or reason why he does that? There are feeders in there as well. I am going to try frozen bloodworms and Mysis shrimp tomorrow if he continues to not eat.

Some times new fish take a couple of days to a week or more to eat. They have to get used to their environment. I had a large 10" jack dempsey purchased from an auction. It took him around 3 weeks until he started to eat. Cichlids can go over a month without eating. Venustus are pigs. I have an 8" male that is the first one to eat. Just make sure you don't see white thin stringy feces in his stool because this is a sign of malawi blout and you will have to medicate with metro asap.
