Hey Everyone! Here's a little update on my "red devil" pair. Use that term loosely. I bought them as devils but been told they look a lot like midas. I'm cool with that! They have laid eggs twice and ate them both times. Here's hoping the 3rd time is the charm. The Big Piebald is the male, and little one the female. I've had the big male for 3 years and the female for about 6 months or so. One loan giant danio in there and a common pleco. That's it! Any tips on successfully breeding these two are appreciated!

Added a couple amazon swords cause I'm getting into live plants and wanted to try my luck with these. Anyone have any experience growing live plants with big cichlids? I'm running just one T8 6500k zoomed light for about 10 hours a day on a timer. I know these guys are diggers so we'll see. I had one sword floating around already this morning. Any tips on growing these swords are appreciated!

Thanks for watching!

It really depends on the fish. I had a pair of Jacks that were constantly digging plants up. I thought I would stop it by tying the plants to rocks. They just shredded the plants right down to the rocks. I also had a male jag who didn't bother with any plants in his tank.

i dont think you should bother planting anything with big cichlids like that... they just dig it up and you end up with dead or unrooted plants.
However, it can be done if done right. Though you will really have to secure them with a breeding pair. Put them in small clay pots and make sure the gravel is packed in.

Thanks Scott! Dude this tank and pair of midas of yours is awesome! I thought I saw your stuff on here before. Left a few messages on your videos trying to touch base with you on how you got your amazon swords to take off so well. So far these two swords in my tank are doing pretty well and I can actually see new growth already on them. If they can just hurry up and get a good root structure going in there I think they'll be okay. One plant was uprooted once but since then they have left the swords alone. I just have black sand for substrate so I don't know how nutritious it will be for the swords in the long run, but for now it seems to be working. Scott, in one of your youtube videos I thought I read you had flourite in your tank for substrate. Was that the case? It seemed to do the trick. Any other tips on breeding or working with live plants and cichlids would be appreciated.

And thanks everyone for the kind comments. I have enjoyed having this big beast around the last few years. Hopefully he'll start figuring out how to use his bits and pieces and make some fry.
