Apologies for the tedious post. But can anyone help me with tank sizes? I've always known fish tanks by dimensions 4x1.5x1.5 etc. Or sometimes in litres. You guys seem to have a standardised size for a volume of tank. For example I can't picture when someone mentions a 55. What are the dimensions of it? It compounds it when you start talking about "tall" or "long". And what is a "breeder" how does that effect the size? I have a 180. But I only know that cus its what I have. If someone asks me how big my tank is I would say its 6x2x2 rather than a volume. I know the Gallon/ US Gallon issue doesn't help matters. But even so I wouldn't describe my tank in gallons to someone. My other tank is around 65 US gallons. But I don't know if its actually a '65' or if its just coincidence that it works out that way. It could be a 65 long or tall for all I know. So I guess what im asking, and I know its boring, but can anyone write a little list of commonn sizes with their dimensions. Thankyou :)

FME, they are just standardized common sizes for tanks, so that consumers will find it easier toget equipment such as filter etc. for example, a common standard size tank in europe (which i have) is a 60L tank, which is 60cmx35cmx30cm. for tanks that are 2' wide and 2' tall, you just take the length of the tank in centimetres and that is your US gallonage. from there its just a matter of simple maths.

That doesn't explain much though. In another post a guy asked if his 55 is overstocked. I cant picture how big a 55 is dimension wise. A 55 is a standard dize, right? And I have no clue what a 40 breeder is.

Ok this is of the top of my head... 5-1x1x1 10-2x1x1 60L(European)-60cmx35x30 20 three different versions, all mentioned on here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080701005724AADizmL standard 29-30"x12"x18" standard 30- all mentioned here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061003173941AANkS5S 40B-36"Lx18"Wx16" tall. standard 55- 48 inches long, 12.5 inches wide, and about 19 to 21 inches high. standard 75- Height = 21 Width = 18 Length = 48 standard 90-48 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 25 and standard 125-72 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 23, and other standard sizes larger than that can be worked out using mathematics.

beat me to it, but some of those aren't too common standard sizes, and you missed a few.

Thanks for all that. I think I've always identified with dimensions rather than volume as its a much more important figure. for example a 6x2x2 versus a 2x2x6. Both are 180g, but what you can keep in them are vastly different. not just the size of the fish. But the number of smaller fish due to surface area for gas exchange.
